I couldn’t let this day pass without a little celebration to honor these amazing creatures.
The first Saturday in September is National Hummingbird Day.
Did you know?
Hummingbirds are some of the smallest birds in the world, yet they can fly up to 60 miles per hour.
They travel thousands of miles each year during migrations.
Hummingbird’s wings move in a figure-8 motion that allows them to fly in all different directions. They can even fly upside down and backward!
Hummingbirds are important pollinators for many of our wildflowers.
As they feed, they spread pollen among plants - making them vital to the health of ecosystems worldwide. Some spread more pollen than bees!
These little sweeties typically weigh only four grams fully grown!
Hummingbirds have a lifespan of three to nine years.
Hummingbirds are why I love summertime!

Hi Jill, what a lovely post. We have sunbirds here which are related to hummingbirds. I also love them and have just done a series of hummingbird illustrations for a children’s book.
Interesting hummingbird facts. Whenever I see one, I think of you! Hope your long weekend is a good one.
