Hi Jill, what a lovely post. We have sunbirds here which are related to hummingbirds. I also love them and have just done a series of hummingbird illustrations for a children’s book.
Thank you, Robbie. I'll have to check photos of your sunbirds. How exciting about your children's book! I'll look forward to it. I hope you're feeling better. xo
Hi Jill - it's Barb from Book Club Mom! I love hummingbirds and always look forward to seeing your videos. It's endless entertainment! I didn't know they worked their wings in figure 8s. Hope you are doing well and staying cool - super hot up here today!
Hi Barb! You're right, the hummingbirds do provide endless entertainment. I'm happy you're able to enjoy them, too. We've got hot temps for the next few days as well. Stay cool and enjoy the holiday! Thanks for visiting. xo
Hummingbirds are wonderful to see out and about, but if you blink, you might miss them. I'm happy you enjoy seeing other birds, Aussie Jo. Thank you for stopping by! xo
Such interesting facts! 60 mph? Figure 8s and all directions. I had no idea. Thank you for enlightening us, Jill. I see them outside my window often. They are a lovely sight. :)
That's true, Jacqui. Normally, they won't go longer than 15 minutes without eating. They can last around 3 to 5 hours without food, but after that they are at risk of starving. When they sleep at night, their metabolism drops, consuming less energy. Thanks for your visit! xo
I enjoy learning more about hummingbirds:Their wings move in a figure-8 motion that allows them to fly in all different directions. They can even fly upside down and backward! Facts I did not know.
Thanks for making your blog a cheery spot in the chaos, Jill!
Such beautiful photos, Jill! I’m happy that since we got our garden and patio put in, we’ve been seeing a lot more hummingbirds 🙂 I get particularly excited when they feed off the plants as well as the feeders. Makes me feel we’re doing something right 🙂
I know that feeling, Marie! Yes, you are doing something right. I'm happy you all made it through the hurricane and now you're seeing the beautiful Eastern Tiger Swallowtail! Thanks for stopping by. xo
We love our hummers! They give us many hours of enjoyment in exchange for a little bit of sugar water. A win-win for both of us! Although sweet critters, they can be vicious fighters as well when it comes to defending what they think of as their source of food. Just recently one decided that our cascading lilac of his and when not feeding he would sit on it or near by making sure all critters, from other hummers to the hummingbird moth and butterflies, stayed away. You want to sit them down and let them know there's more than enough for all. :)
I know you love them too, Kay! Yes, this time of year they get especially vicious in their battles. I'm really going to miss them when they migrate, but at least I have hundreds of photos! Thanks for stopping by. xo
Hummingbirds deserve a special day. They are drawn to one particular flowering tree in our backyard and visit often. We also have a lot of hummingbird moths. ❤️ Happy Hummingbird Day!
Thank you, Gwen! Yes, they do deserve a day of recognition. That's great you have the moths. We see a few now and then. They're fast, too! Thanks for visiting! xo
Great to hear! We've got hot temperatures returning, but we've enjoyed low humidity for the past could of days. The hummingbirds are going nuts!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I'll have to be especially nice to my hummers tomorrow (Saturday). The way they dive bomb and zoom around my deck I'm not surprised they can fly up to 60 MPH! I feel fortunate that they visit me all year round. They are special creatures. Cheers, Roslyn.

I'm happy to hear you're able to enjoy the hummingbirds, Betsy. They are entertaining. Thanks for visiting! xo
I've also heard that they expend so much energy with their non-stop wings, they really must eat most of the day. Interesting birds. Thanks, Jill!
