Hi Jill, what a lovely post. We have sunbirds here which are related to hummingbirds. I also love them and have just done a series of hummingbird illustrations for a children’s book.

Hummingbirds are wonderful to see out and about, but if you blink, you might miss them. I'm happy you enjoy seeing other birds, Aussie Jo. Thank you for stopping by! xo

Such interesting facts! 60 mph? Figure 8s and all directions. I had no idea. Thank you for enlightening us, Jill. I see them outside my window often. They are a lovely sight. :)

I've also heard that they expend so much energy with their non-stop wings, they really must eat most of the day. Interesting birds. Thanks, Jill!

Expand full comment

That's true, Jacqui. Normally, they won't go longer than 15 minutes without eating. They can last around 3 to 5 hours without food, but after that they are at risk of starving. When they sleep at night, their metabolism drops, consuming less energy. Thanks for your visit! xo

I enjoy learning more about hummingbirds:Their wings move in a figure-8 motion that allows them to fly in all different directions. They can even fly upside down and backward! Facts I did not know.

Thanks for making your blog a cheery spot in the chaos, Jill!

Such beautiful photos, Jill! I’m happy that since we got our garden and patio put in, we’ve been seeing a lot more hummingbirds 🙂 I get particularly excited when they feed off the plants as well as the feeders. Makes me feel we’re doing something right 🙂

We love our hummers! They give us many hours of enjoyment in exchange for a little bit of sugar water. A win-win for both of us! Although sweet critters, they can be vicious fighters as well when it comes to defending what they think of as their source of food. Just recently one decided that our cascading lilac of his and when not feeding he would sit on it or near by making sure all critters, from other hummers to the hummingbird moth and butterflies, stayed away. You want to sit them down and let them know there's more than enough for all. :)

I know you love them too, Kay! Yes, this time of year they get especially vicious in their battles. I'm really going to miss them when they migrate, but at least I have hundreds of photos! Thanks for stopping by. xo

I'll have to be especially nice to my hummers tomorrow (Saturday). The way they dive bomb and zoom around my deck I'm not surprised they can fly up to 60 MPH! I feel fortunate that they visit me all year round. They are special creatures. Cheers, Roslyn.
